Western Australia launches two million dollar cardiovascular research fellowship with Heart Foundation
The Cook Labor Government and the National Heart Foundation of Australia have announced a two million dollar fellowship program to boost cardiovascular research in Western Australia, with applications closing on 13 August 2026.

Western Australia is sharpening its focus on heart health with a new two million dollar research fellowship program designed to attract, develop and retain cardiovascular researchers in the state. The initiative is being delivered through a partnership between the state’s Future Health Research and Innovation Fund and the National Heart Foundation of Australia, marking the first fellowship announced under the fund’s new strategy.
Cardiovascular disease remains one of the biggest drivers of illness and death across Australia, underscoring the need for sustained investment in research that improves prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Better treatment of cardiovascular disease can improve heart function and lower the risk of heart attacks and strokes, making it a critical area for long term health gains.
Medical Research Minister Stephen Dawson said the government’s FHRI Fund is driving research that tackles major health challenges and delivers better outcomes for Western Australians. “Working with the Heart Foundation, the Cook Labor Government is bringing researchers together, supporting future leaders, and strengthening WA’s world class research sector,” he said.
Heart Foundation WA General Manager Helena Viola said the organisation is proud to partner with the WA Government to attract and retain the best and brightest cardiovascular researchers in Western Australia. “This represents a joint commitment to supporting the next generation of local researchers and helping to improve heart health outcomes for WA people,” she said.
The partnership is focused on early and mid career researchers, with the aim of retaining talented researchers in Western Australia while building long term research capability in an area of significant health importance. Fellowship applicants are expected to undertake research that advances understanding of cardiovascular disease and contributes to improved health outcomes for people living in the state. Applications for the fellowship close on 13 August 2026.
The program forms part of a broader suite of FHRI Fund Research Fellowships and is the first to be announced under the new FHRI Fund Strategy, reflecting the Cook Labor Government’s commitment to supporting WA’s research and innovation community.
