Education Minister Sabine Winton has officially opened new $23.2 million facilities at Byford Secondary College, delivering on a key Cook Labor Government election commitment in Darling Range and increasing the school's capacity by an additional 300 students to help accommodate growing enrolments in the fast-growing area.
Project details and new facilities
The $23.2 million project includes a new classroom block with six classrooms, three science laboratories, a STEM laboratory, two ICT laboratories, staff areas and an expanded student services area. The build also features a new mechatronics and robotics laboratory, an education support classroom, and meeting rooms. Refurbishments converted an existing food and textile studio into a commercial food studio to cater for Certificate II studies, while additional parking was also added to the school grounds. The building project was designed by TAG Architects (The Architecture Group Pty Ltd) and was built by Badge Constructions (WA) Pty Ltd.
Minister and MLA comments
Education Minister Sabine Winton said the Cook Labor Government is delivering on its commitment to families in Darling Range, with a major investment that will support Byford Secondary College as this community continues to grow. "These new facilities give students more opportunities to learn across science, technology, food studies, and other important areas, while also providing the additional classroom space the school needs," Winton said. "I'm particularly pleased to see investment in specialist facilities that connect students with future study, training and career pathways, including areas where we know skilled workers are in demand."
Darling Range MLA Hugh Jones said the upgrades boost learning, teaching and growth at Byford Secondary College, and mean more capacity to teach, plan and support everyone in the school community. "The STEM labs and commercial kitchen give Byford's future STEM and food students the learning environments and equipment they need to get ahead," Jones said. "This announcement is a proud moment and marks the official delivery by the Cook Labor Government of my election commitment to the Byford community."

This significant project forms part of the Cook Labor Government's efforts to put Western Australia first by investing a record $6.4 billion in education infrastructure since 2017. With more families choosing to live and raise a family in this fast-growing area, these upgrades will ensure Byford Secondary College can meet increasing enrolments for years to come.
